Rising Stars Productions

Our Nationally Recognized Award-Winning Youth Educational Theatre Program

About the Program

The Woodland Opera House’s youth educational theatre series, the Rising Stars Productions, is a nationally recognized award-winning theatre program open to youth performers between the ages of 7 years old and 18 years old (must be a high school senior.)  We currently produce three youth musicals a year: one for all ages (ages 7 through high school senior), one for ages 7 through 12 years old, and our JTF Troupe, which is open to ages 12 through high school senior.

Each production is fully produced by the Woodland Opera House and helmed by a professional creative team. Young performers get the opportunity to learn about the mechanics of theatre production, vocal technique, acting, and dance within an encouraging and positive environment where performers are free to learn and be their unique selves.

While our popular Musical Theatre Workshops and ShowBiz Kidz summer camps are open to all without audition, our Rising Stars Productions are by audition-only. Auditions are usually held a month before the rehearsals begin. Since these are educationally based, every rehearsal is also a mini-lesson in everything theatre related.

Award Winning-Theatre Program

Our JTF Troupe production also attends the annual Junior Theatre Festival West annually.  Created and produced by iTheatrics, and sponsored by the likes of Music Theatre International (MTI), Disney Musicals, iHeart Radio Broadway, Playbill, and more, the Junior Theatre Festival West is a weekend event that brings in theatre groups from across the globe for a celebration in all things theatre.  Groups present a 15-minute piece from a previously produced Broadway Junior or Broadway KIDS title for adjudication. The festival also includes workshops from industry professionals, as well as concerts and presentations from Broadway stars and composers.

Our program has had the fortune to bring home the following awards from JTF West:

2024 – Outstanding Production Award – Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical JR.

2023 – Excellence in Ensemble Work – Godspell JR.

2022 – Excellence in Ensemble Work – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang JR.

We look forward to attending the 2025 Junior Theatre Festival West with our upcoming fall production of Mean Girls JR!

“The kids from Woodland Opera House were a definite stand out at this year’s JTF,” said Calhoun. “The group was a well oiled machine and it was clear that they had amazing training from their director and choreographer. It’s important at this age to learn proper technique and it was abundantly clear that the folks at Woodland Opera House are doing just that.” – Jeff Calhoun, Director, Disney’s Newsies on Broadway, 2024.

Rising Stars Audition Workshops

Rising Stars Audition Workshops

We just completed a successful first round of Audition Workshops for our upcoming production of Children of Eden JR. led by Education Director, Andrea St. Clair, which culminated with mock auditions with Children of Eden JR. director/choreographer, Angela Baltezore!

Our next Rising Stars Audition Workshop will be for our JTF Troupe production of Mean Girls JR. and will be held this summer. Stay tuned for enrollment details!

Please note that these workshops have been created to assist young performers in developing strong audition skills and to help de-mystify the audition process. They are not a guarantee of being cast in the related Rising Stars production.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

All roles open to any gender, though must play the role’s gender as defined by the script. Some roles may be split depending on turnout. Casting is limited. Not everyone who auditions will be cast.

Father

Father is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the universe. Father has a larger-than-life persona and embodies an authoritative presence, balanced with a fair amount of humor and a sense of fun. Father truly loves his children but expects obedience, and is not afraid to punish them if they don’t follow his wishes. Cast an excellent, advanced actor and a great singer in this role who can truly command the stage. Ideally, this actor will read as older onstage.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: G4

Vocal range bottom: Bb2

Adam/Noah

Adam/Noah should be a versatile performer. Adam embodies the excitement, wonder, and childlike innocence of mankind before the fall, and also the strength and persistence needed after they are expelled from the Garden. He should pair well and have a great relationship with Eve, since he will eventually choose her over Father. Noah is also the leader of his family but is a bit less serious, although he also must make a big decision that affects the lives of everyone he loves. Cast a performer who is a natural leader and has a charismatic stage presence. This performer should be a great actor and a wonderful singer, and be comfortable taking command of the stage.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: Ab4

Vocal range bottom: Ab2

Eve/Mama

Eve/Mama must win over the audience’s hearts. Eve is bright, precocious, loving, and has an adventurous streak. Ultimately, her curiosity is what leads to her banishment, though she never stops loving Father. Her life gets harder after leaving the Garden, but Eve’s spark never fully goes out. Mama is more subtle than Eve, but has a deep strength that is evident in her love for her family. She honest, smart, and is not afraid to offer Noah her advice and opinions. This role calls for an exceptional actress and outstanding singer who can pair well with Adam/Noah.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: A3

Snake

The Snake (Snake 1, Snake 2, Snake 3, Snake 4, and Snake 5) lures Eve to the tree and ultimately convinces her to take a bite of the apple. These are excellent movers or dancers who can make the Snake feel cohesive.

Gender: Any

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: A3

Young Cain

Young Cain is reminiscent of Eve in the Garden. He is curious, confident, and wants to know the answers to all his questions. Cast a good actor and singer who can work with Cain to create continuity between the character as a child and an adult.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: Db4

Vocal range bottom: Gb2

Young Abel

Young Abel is gentle, sweet, and content with their life as a family, even without the Garden. He loves his parents and his brother, and does not have the same need for answers as Young Cain. Cast a good actor and singer who can work with Abel to create continuity between the character at both ages.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: Db4

Vocal range bottom: Gb2

Cain/Japheth

Cain/ Japheth must be comfortable making strong choices onstage. Cain is passionate, curious, longs for adventure, and places the blame squarely at his parents’ feet for giving away his portion of the Garden. He is angry at Adam, Eve, Father, and the unfairness of his circumstances. He doesn’t return from beyond the waterfall with the intention to kill Abel – but, he allows rage to overtake him, and must endure the consequences. Japheth is more polished than Cain, though has a similar rebellious streak that almost results in the same tragedy. His love for Yonah is his driving force, and he is willing to risk everything in order for them to be together. Need a fantastic singer and a wonderful actor as Cain/Japheth.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: Ab4

Vocal range bottom: C#3

Abel/Ham

Abel/Ham should be able to create two completely different characters. Abel is gentle, thoughtful, and obedient. He would never cause trouble on his own, but he is caught between his love for his brother, Cain, and his love for his parents. Though Abel respects his parents and Father, Cain can usually find a way to convince Abel to follow him. Abel reflects Adam’s choice to leave the Garden, and his death is a turning point in the show. Ham is one of Noah’s sons, and Aphra’s husband. He wants to please Father, and is more mild-mannered than his brother Shem. Needs a performer in these roles who is a good singer and solid actor.

Vocal range top: E4

Vocal range bottom: F3

Seth/Shem

Seth/Shem should focus mostly on Shem. Seth appears onstage at an important time in the story, but does not speak or sing. Shem is the oldest of the brothers and rather hot-headed. Married to Aysha, he is the first to blame Yonah for the family’s problems aboard the ark. Shem does not have a solo, so he does not need to be a strong singer. Needs an expressive actor with a great stage presence who can make strong character choices.

Gender: Male

Yonah

Yonah is a descendant of Cain who works as a servant for Noah’s family. While Yonah finds herself in unfortunate circumstances, she handles adversity with grace and strength. She is kind and selfless, and ultimately wins Father and Noah over with her goodness when Noah finally gives she and Japheth permission to wed. Cast an expressive actress with a wonderful singing voice who pairs well with Cain/Japheth.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: Eb5

Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Aysha

Aysha is a bit unhappy with their situation aboard the ark. Married to Shem, she also blames Yonah for their troubles, and isn’t afraid to let everyone know exactly what she thinks. Aysha does not need to be a strong singer – needs an animated performer with a good stage presence for this role.

Gender: Female

Aphra

Aphra is a bit of worrywart. Married to Ham, she worries about the flood, and how it will affect their growing family. Like Aysha, Aphra doesn’t need to be a strong singer, but she should be a good actor able to embody Aphra’s sensitive nature.

Gender: Female

Ensemble

Ensemble consists of the Storytellers, Soloist, Soloist (1, 2, 3), Female Soloist, Seth’s Wife, and optional Animals. Feel free to cast as many performers as Storytellers who want to participate in the show. For Soloist, Soloist (1, 2, 3), and Female Soloist, check the vocal range to make sure you cast a performer who can handle the music. Seth’s Wife does not speak and does not need to be a strong singer, so this is a great cameo for a newer performer.

Gender: Any

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

All roles open to any gender, though must play the role’s gender as defined by the script. Casting is limited. Not everyone who auditions will be cast.

Damian

Co-chair of the Student Activities Committee and Janis’s best friend. Damian is smart, witty, and confident and occasionally serves as the show’s narrator.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: G5

Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Janis Sarkisian

Marches to the beat of her own drum and, with Damian, narrates throughout the show. After a falling-out with Regina in middle school, she became a bit of a social outcast and still holds a grudge against Regina. Damian is her best friend and lovingly refers to her as his “art freak.”

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: D5

Vocal range bottom: A3

Cady Heron

Arrives at North Shore High a clueless transfer student but is quickly wrapped up in brutal social politics. Though at her core Cady is levelheaded, self-assured, and kind, when she goes undercover with the Plastics, she becomes unrecognizable.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: G2

Ms. Norbury

Cady’s homeroom and calculus teacher, and she oversees the Mathletes. Though she is a bit jaded and more than a little sarcastic, Ms. Norbury sees the real Cady and encourages her to be true to herself.

Gender: Female

Regina George

The undisputed Queen Bee of North Shore High School, and she knows
it. She’s confident, clever, and completely unbothered by anyone else’s opinion. While Regina purposefully manipulates everyone around her (including her own mom), at her heart, she’s trying to fit in, just like everyone else.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: Eb5

Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Gretchen Wieners

Regina’s stressed-out second-in-command. As much as Regina appears not to care what people think, Gretchen cares very much, and she’s especially paranoid when it comes to Regina. She takes the Plastics very seriously and is completely controlled by Regina, until Cady comes along.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: G2

Karen Smith

The third member of the Plastics. While Karen’s lack of intelligence is a running joke throughout the show, she sees the other girls more clearly than most people and is the most laid back of the three.

Gender: Female

Vocal range top: D#5

Vocal range bottom: G2

Aaron Samuels

A nice guy who has no idea that he’s the high school heartthrob. Although he doesn’t enjoy the drama of high school social politics, he gets used as a pawn between Cady and Regina, though he genuinely likes Cady.

Gender: Male

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: B3

Mrs. Heron and Mr. Heron

Cady’s parents.

Mr. Duvall

The school principal. Like Ms. Norbury, he’s seen it all, although he’s slightly more formal and sincere than Ms. Norbury’s sarcasm.

Gender: Male

Shane Oman

A couple of spoken lines but much discussed in the show’s plot.

Gender: Male

Kevin G

Captain of the Mathletes! He’s confident and excited about competing with the team, and he’s proud of their accomplishments.

Gender: Male

Martin

Kevin G’s second in command.

Gender: Male

Mrs. George

Desperate to be a “cool mom”.

Gender: Female

Ensemble

Party Guests, the Debate Team, Dance Team, Show Choir, Mathletes, and Students. Cast Taylor, Caitlyn, Rachel, Caroline Krafft, Tony, Marymount Captain, Teary Girl, Mathletes Moderator, Sonja Acquino, Glenn Cocco, Dawn, Grace, Lizzie, Sophie, and Jason from the ensemble. All these roles have a line or two, but they don’t sing solos.
