SHARON JOYCE presents Disney’s NEWSIES – Broadway Musical

Disney “Newsies” is based on the real-life New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899 that changed the American labor movement for good. The musical tells the story of Jack Kelly (played by Opera House alum Casey Camacho), a defiant newsboy who dreams of life away from the big city as an artist. “Newsies” were young children, often orphans or runaways, who earned their keep selling newspapers and living off the meager profits. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer (Rodger McDonald) raises papers prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow workers take action. With the help from spunky female reporter, Katherine Plumber (Grace Leekley) all of New York City soon recognize the power of committed individuals standing as one.

A large ensemble cast rounds out this production directed by Crissi Cairns and choreographed by Jake Gutiérrez-Montoya. Cairns says of the show, “Newsies…has a timeless message about standing up for what you believe in. We are excited to be one of the first to bring this show to our area.”

Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” “Newsies” is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Jia-Min Rosendale provides music direction with vocal direction by James C. Glica-Hernandez. Glica-Hernandez shares that, “Newsies is one of those shows which takes both the cast and audience on a dynamic journey of challenges and hope.” He continues, “Our cast is incredibly talented; adding a unique sparkle to every note, movement, and word.” Denise Miles is costume designer with Craig Vincent and Joey Vincent as set and lighting designers.
