Stepping Out, by British playwright Richard Harris, debuted in London’s West End in 1984 and on Broadway in 1987. In 1991, the play was turned into a feature film starring Liza Minnelli. This heartwarming comedy introduces us to a diverse group of everyday people who come together each week for a tap class in a dingy church hall in north London. Their instructor Mavis (played by Jenny Plasse), a down-on-her-luck former professional dancer, has her hands full managing the range of personalities and skill levels of her motley crew while at the same time dealing with her gruff, outspoken accompanist Mrs. Fraser (played by Nancy Agee).
Over the course of the play, the seven women and one man in the class (played by Nikolina Akraboff, Emily Delk, Charlotte French, Patricia Glass, Deborah Hammond, Analise Langford, Ania Mieszkowska, and Darryl Strohl-DeHerrera) hilariously (and sometimes heartbreakingly) reveal their strengths and insecurities as they step out of their comfort zones to make meaningful connections with each other, all the while preparing for their tap-dancing debut at a big charity concert. Stepping Out is a fairly unknown comic gem of a play that combines the quirky but relatable characters of a pull-on-your-heartstrings comedy like Steel Magnolias with the showbiz struggles and razzmatazz of a musical like A Chorus Line.
