Community Workshop: The Art of Irish Dance!

NEW! Community Workshop: The Art of Irish Dance! 

Ever dream of learning how to dance like dancers in Riverdance? Do you want to have a fun opportunity to learn something new? Or maybe you’re auditioning for our upcoming production of Legally Blonde and want to gain experience in Irish Dancing prior to auditions? Then come join us!

 

This workshop will provide dancers with an immersive experience in Irish dance, focusing on traditional steps, rhythms, and the cultural significance behind the dance form.

 

What to Bring/Wear: Please wear comfortable clothes to move in and bring a water bottle and a notebook/pen.

 

Guest Instructors: Kyla Groeschel and Jessica McElhaney

 

Tuition: $20 (What a steal!)

Ages: Open ages (but if younger than 10 years old, we highly recommend the parent attending as well as this is geared towards older students.)

When/Time: Sunday, April 28th from 10:00 to 11:30 am

About the Instructors

Kyla Groeschel is a Fellow of the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance and an Adjudicator with the Royal Scottish Official Board’s worldwide judges panel. Her deep-rooted love for highland dance was cultivated under the guidance of her teacher, Norine Harmon, igniting a passion that has driven her to teach and mentor countless dancers throughout her career. Many of her students have gone on to become accomplished teachers and judges, as well as claim championship titles at prestigious events such as the Western United States Regionals, Sacramento Valley, British Overseas, and Western United States Open. In recognition of her outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication, Kyla was honored with the Crown and Thistle award by the Sacramento Caledonian Club in 2005. This accolade stands as a testament to her commitment to fostering Scottish fellowship and enriching the dance community.

 
Jessica McElhaney began Scottish dancing in 1999 and Irish dancing just a few years later. She is a full Member of the British Association of Teachers of Dance, the Scottish Dance Teachers’ Alliance, and ScotDance USA. Jessica served on the National Board of Directors representing the Western Region and is the director of the Tartan Hearts School of Highland Dance.

Acting Masterclass: Sketch Comedy

with Anděl Sudik, The Second City

 

Ages 16 through adult

 

NEW! Two-Day Acting Masterclass: Sketch Comedy Workshop with Anděl Sudik!

How do you use improvisation to create sketch material? In this intensive Anděl will draw on her deep well of experience as an actor, writer and director to give you a hands-on experience of what it is like to be in an expedited process, work collaboratively and put up a show.

 

You will learn a brief history, practical application and tools you can use to create sketch material from improvisation again and again whether you are alone or with a group. This workshop is geared to elevate your game while being absolutely accessible and giving you the experience of being an actor, writer, editor and improviser all rolled into one. And it will be fun!

 

Tuition: $150

Ages: 16 through adult

When/Time: Saturday, May 11th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday, May 12th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with a 6:30 pm call for a 7 pm showcase. 

*There will be an hour lunch break each day.

About the Instructor

Anděl Sudik is a director, improviser, actor and writer based in L.A. and Chicago known for her explosive energy onstage and in the classroom as well as her experiential teaching style. She is a faculty member of the Second City where she teaches sketch writing and improvisation and in Chicago where she teaches summer intensives. She is an alum of Boom Chicago in Amsterdam, the Second City Touring and resident ETC Company and has directed Sketch, Improvisation and Solo shows at The Public House, Annoyance, iO and Second City. Before 2020 she could be found traveling, teaching and performing all over the states as well as across Europe in festivals and privately. She can also be found doing that now. Teen & Adult Workshops

Intro to Folklorico

Baja California Style

 

 

Ages 12 through adult

 

NEW! Open to dancers ages 12 through adult. This introductory class will teach the basics of Folklorico from the region of Baja California. Classes will begin with warm-ups, history about the region and the style, technique, and dance combinations. Dancers can wear sneakers to this class as it is an introductory course designed for all experience levels.

 

A note about the style: Calabaceados are dances that originated in the city of La Misión, in the northern Mexican state
of Baja California. These dances are lively and upbeat as dancers stomp, jump, and kick to the popular rhythms of Norteño music.

 

Tuition: $25 introductory price!

About the Instructor:

J. Scott Browning has spent the last 15 years living and working in Orlando, Florida. He was a full-time “wizard” at Universal Studios where he opened the Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley areas of the park. He juggled an on-camera career where he appeared in commercials, movies and TV shows. Highlights include: 17 episodes of Nickelodeon’s “I Am Frankie”, “The Right Stuff” on Disney+, “The Last Thing He Wanted” on Netflix, the coming-of-age comedy “Egghead and Twinkie”, and an appearance in Kevin Smith’s horror anthology “Killroy Was Here” available only as an NFT that was available for purchase in 2021. He has found himself back in the Sacramento region to be closer to family and excited to continue his career here.
